Thirsty Thursday: Cruzan 9 Spiced Rum

By  January 17, 2013

Thirsty Thursday is here once again after a two week hiatus. This time we head back to the islands of St. Croix for a taste of Cruzan 9 spiced rum. The last time we had Cruzan was when we had the opportunity to sample their single barrel offering which received an 80/100 from our tasters.

Cruzan 9 was developed when the distillery sought to create a “real” spiced rum. The blend features nine spices including vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, clove, mace, allspice, pepper, and juniper berry. Most of our panel went into the tasting blind so they could try to decipher each spice on its own but a few of us were curious and decided to look at the bottle. Either way this was one tasty rum.

The packaging on this bottle is attractive and the rum glows a rich amber color. Each spice is detailed on the bottom of the label if you’re interested in trying to pick up the individual flavors and Cruzan has creatively included a picture of each spice as an added bonus.

The nose on this rum is incredibly sweet with a huge burst of vanilla the first time around. As we had the opportunity to let it sit in our glasses, several tasters started to pick up hints of spice including nutmeg and pepper.

We sampled Cruzan 9 in stemmed glasses, which helped to open up the various flavors and notes that we could have missed otherwise. Many of our tasters sampled the rum neat and moved on to a few ice cubes followed by a dash of cola to determine how it would fair with mixers.

The first thing you gather when you take a sip of Cruzan 9 is the vanilla. Each sip is incredibly smooth and mildly spicy but vanilla is the primary component in the flavor. As the rum has time to sit on your palate the other spices try to shine through but the only thing we could detect was a hint of nutmeg and caramel.

The finish on this particular bottle was short and sweet. It leaves you with a pleasant caramel and vanilla aftertaste that leads you to take another sip.

Overall, Cruzan 9 is a nice every day rum. We could easily see a few bottles of this making their way into our home bars. This is also a rum that lends itself to desserts and baking. One of our tasters took the remaining portion and turned it into a delicious homemade frosting, which we sampled on vanilla cupcakes! Our panel gave Cruzan 9 a rating of 81/100, slightly higher than our score for Cruzan Single Barrel. For a quick and enjoyable cocktail please see the recipe listed below.
