This Thirsty Thursday we re-visit the flavors of Barbados with a taste of Mount Gay Black Barrel Rum. Black Barrel is a small batch, handcrafted blend made of matured double pot distillates and aged column distillates. In a process that they call “finishing” the blended rum is matured for a second time in deeply charred Bourbon oak barrels. As one of the five offerings from Mount Gay Distilleries, it definitely stands out among the crowd.
The unique bottle shape is accented by a wood and cork stopper, stamped glass, and creative labels. In the bottle the rum has a dark amber hue.
Spice, various fruits and wood tones are prominent upon an initial smell. The spicy notes give way to caramel and fruit after the rum has a chance to open up.
The first thing you taste is a rich sweet caramel, followed by a bit of oak and various spices in the background. It gives way to some notes of vanilla and a softer, lingering spice.
Black Barrel has a nice, smooth finish that is comprised of vanilla, caramel and a touch of oak. The most dominant flavor is caramel followed by a sweet oak in the background.
Overall, Mount Gay Black Barrel rum is a full-bodied, well-rounded rum that is ideal for sipping or in a classic cocktail. Notes of caramel, vanilla, and oak will invite you to take another drink and I could see this as the ideal summer go-to for many at the bar and at home.
